Hamburger Helper Stroganoff Recipe

Here’s a homemade version of Hamburger Helper Stroganoff that’s easy to make and much tastier than the boxed version:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) lean ground beef
  • 8 oz (225g) egg noodles
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the Ground Beef:
    • In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
    • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it’s browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  2. Saute Onions, Garlic, and Mushrooms:
    • Push the ground beef to one side of the skillet and add the chopped onion to the empty side. Cook for 2-3 minutes until softened.
    • Add the minced garlic and sliced mushrooms to the skillet. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the mushrooms are softened and golden brown.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:
    • Sprinkle the flour over the ground beef and vegetables in the skillet. Stir well to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.
    • Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Stir everything together, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. Cook the Noodles:
    • While the sauce is simmering, cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  5. Combine and Finish:
    • Once the sauce has thickened, reduce the heat to low and stir in the sour cream until well combined. Make sure not to let it boil once you’ve added the sour cream.
    • Taste the sauce and season with salt and pepper as needed.
    • Add the cooked egg noodles to the skillet and toss everything together until the noodles are coated in the sauce.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the Hamburger Helper Stroganoff hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
